The Castle of Volognano - whose name is probably of Etruscan origin or derived from the Roman Lucio Volumnio - dates back to the eleventh century. Since the times of Dante and Petrarch, the Castle has welcomed famous people and more recently also Gioacchino Rossini, Giosuè Carducci and Enrico Fermi.
At the beginning of the 60's the entrepreneur Ezio Pecchioli bought the company and planted the first vineyards specialized in the lands of Volognano that were cultivated with the typical mixed crops of the Tuscan sharecropping; since then three generations have worked and invested in this ambitious project. The interest and dedication that bind the vine to the Castle have been directed towards products of superior quality, in line with the technological evolution of recent years while respecting the ancient traditions.
Today, in the historical residence, carefully restored and transformed into an accommodation facility, it is possible to stay in an atmosphere of the past. In the old cellar, also restored in perfect harmony with the style of the manor house, are organized tastings with Tuscan food specialties, food and wine workshops and visits to the agricultural museum, set up with tools used in the past for working the land and vineyards, some of which are of great value.
The farm is located in the Chianti Colli Fiorentini area, very close to Florence, at about 400 m above sea level and includes 200 hectares, most of which are dedicated to the cultivation of vines and olives. The cultivation of the vineyards is aimed at safeguarding the heritage of the area, with particular attention to those "native" vines such as Sangiovese, Colorino, Canaiolo, Trebbiano Toscano and Malvasia.
These grape varieties are able to give an added value of perfumes and aromas to the palate, exalting the peculiarities of a territory already in itself characterized by a great and historical vocation for wine. The wines are the result of a scrupulous management, which at every stage of the production process is aimed exclusively at quality.
In Volognano you will have the opportunity to discover the exceptional richness of the types of Tuscan wine and its extra virgin olive oils, with particular attention to the presentation of the most important wine and oil production areas of Tuscany.
The tasting will begin with a general introduction to the appreciation of wine or oil and then proceed with the tasting of a selection of products tasted according to their characteristics.
