Discover the essence of Montepulciano with our exclusive DOCG wine, made from 100% Sangiovese grapes. This fine wine comes from the municipality of Montepulciano and is cultivated in the La Croce vineyard, located in the Gracciano area. At 45 years old, La Croce is our oldest vineyard, offering a yield of 45 quintals per hectare.
The vineyards are located at an altitude of 290 metres on soils rich in sand, clay, silt and limestone. The planting density is 5,000 vines per hectare, with an annual production of 1,000 bottles. We use the spurred cordon cultivation system to guarantee the best possible quality.
Harvesting begins in the first ten days of October and is carried out strictly by hand, with careful selection of the best and ripest bunches. If necessary, some bunches are left to ripen a few extra days for a second small harvest.
Fermentation lasts approximately 25-35 days at controlled temperatures of 28-30°C in steel tanks. Intense pumping over and delestage take place in the first few days, which become shorter and softer towards the end of the process. Continuous tastings determine the moment of racking. The wine also undergoes malolactic fermentation.
For ageing, the wine rests for 18-24 months in Slavonian oak barrels of various capacities, while 30% of the mass is aged for 12 months in French oak barriques. After the phase in wood, the wine settles for 6 months in the bottle before release.
Our Sangiovese (Prugnolo Gentile) offers a maximum exaltation of red and black fruits, ripe and under spirits, perfectly matched with floral scents such as violet and rose. There is no lack of interesting spicy hints, such as cocoa, tobacco and dried mushrooms. On the palate, it proves to be a full, robust and delicately tannic wine.
It is recommended to serve this wine at a temperature of 18-20°C. It is perfect in combination with typical local dishes, such as roast meat, first courses with tasty and meaty sauces (such as Cinta Senese ragout), game and mature cheeses.
This wine has an ageing capacity of 15-20 years, making it an excellent choice for both immediate consumption and cellar ageing.
